Mistral or OpenAI? Comparison for SMEs

Mistral AI is an AI provider based in Paris, which, according to its own statement, processes data by default in the EU and publishes many models openly under Apache 2.0. OpenAI is a US provider with very powerful, mostly closed models. There is a lot to be said for Mistral for sensitive data or the desire to operate models itself; OpenAI can be ahead in individual peak tasks.

Privacy and data location

According to the Mistral Help Center, data is stored in the EU by default; only if the US endpoint is explicitly used in the USA. Individual functions can transfer data to sub-processors outside the EU; corporate customers can switch off such functions (as of October 2026). In any case, you need a data processing agreement for personal data.

If you want to be on the safe side, you can use an open model on your own hardware or in a German data center, for example via the IONOS AI Model Hub, which also offers Mistral models.

Open models as an advantage

Many Mistral models are open-weight under Apache 2.0 – including, according to Mistral documentation, Mistral Small 4, Mistral Large 3 and the Ministral 3 family. This means that you can download the model and operate it yourself, without license fees and without data going to Mistral. OpenAI also offers open models with gpt-oss, but the main models behind ChatGPT are closed.

Performance honestly classified

For typical office tasks – summarizing, reading data from documents, answering based on company knowledge – current Mistral models are well suited. For very demanding tasks such as complex reasoning or sophisticated programming, the strongest OpenAI models can come out on top. Instead of believing rankings, it's worth testing your own examples.

Mistral says it processes data in the EU as standard. Whether a specific use is GDPR-compliant depends on the contract, data and functions. A self-operated open-weight model offers the most control.

Is Mistral as good as ChatGPT?

For many corporate tasks, current Mistral models are well suited. For very complex tasks, the strongest OpenAI models can come out on top. A test with your own examples is more meaningful than any ranking.
