In short

Mistral AI offers language models in several sizes: compact Ministral models for simple tasks on small hardware, Mistral Small as an all-rounder for chat and documents, Mistral Large for demanding texts, and special models for code, speech and text recognition. Many of these are openly available under Apache 2.0.

Mistral AI offers language models in several sizes and for different tasks: compact Ministral models for simple tasks on small hardware, Mistral Small as an all-rounder, Mistral Large for demanding texts, and special models for code, speech and text recognition. Many of them are available as open-weight under Apache 2.0 and can be operated by yourself.

Mistral's model list is long and changes frequently. For companies, it's not the latest name that counts, but which model completes a task reliably and affordably. The following overview is based on Mistral's model overview (as of October 2026).

Which model for which task?

  • Sorting e-mails, reading forms: A small model like Ministral is often sufficient and inexpensive.
  • Chatbot with company knowledge, summaries: Mistral Small is a good place to start.
  • Analysing long contracts, demanding texts: Mistral Large or Medium.
  • Telephone assistant, dictations: Speech recognition from the Voxtral family.
  • Internal software development: Codestral.

API or run it yourself?

Mistral models can be used via Mistral's interface, via providers such as the IONOS AI Model Hub (such as Mistral Small 24B and Mistral Nemo) or on your own hardware. For self-operation, the smaller open-weight models are the most practical; which hardware is required is explained in the article Hardware for your own AI.

Rule of thumb: start small

  1. Describe the task with 20 real examples.
  2. Test with a small model.
  3. Only if the results are not enough, switch to the next larger one.

In this way, you avoid having to pay for a large, expensive model for simple tasks on a permanent basis. Often, the combination is the most economical: a small model for the masses, a large one for the difficult cases.

Mistral compared to other open models

Mistral is not the only family of open models – Qwen, Llama and gpt-oss are alternatives with their own strengths and licenses. An overview is provided on the page Open Source Language Models; the license differences are explained in the article Open Weight or Open Source?.

We work with you to select the right Mistral model or alternative, test with your data and integrate it into your processes.
