How companies are found in ChatGPT and Perplexity: GEO for mid-sized businesses

In short

Being technically accessible is not enough to be recommended by an AI. What matters is whether your own website is recognizable as a trustworthy, citable source for your industry — with clear facts instead of marketing phrases.

Being technically accessible to AI crawlers is the basic requirement — but it is not yet a guarantee of actually being recommended. Anyone who has already checked whether robots.txt, structured data and an llms.txt are in place (more on this in the article GEO instead of just SEO) should next ask the actually decisive question: Why should an AI system mention my company in particular— from several technically equally accessible providers?

Accessibility is the entry ticket, not the recommendation

AI search systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews formulate answers based on what they can classify as reliable and unambiguous. A website that is crawlable but contains only general marketing statements ("We are your competent partner for...") does not provide a usable basis for a specific recommendation. Facts beat phrasing.

What AI systems actually cite

  • Concrete, verifiable statements – certifications, approvals, metrics, time periods, instead of vague self-description
  • Clearly structured question-and-answer formats, which can be transferred directly into a response
  • Consistent naming of the company across different sources – own website, industry directories, press, review platforms
  • Traceable subject-matter authorship, for example recognizable expertise instead of anonymous editorial copy

The difference between SEO ranking and GEO citability

A page can rank first on Google and still not appear in any AI answer — because both systems evaluate different things. Google places strong weight on links and user signals, while an AI system evaluates how clearly a statement can be extracted from the text. A paragraph that combines fact, number, and context in a clear sentence is more citable than three paragraphs that rephrase the same information in marketing language.

How this can be implemented in practice

The most effective lever is usually to sharpen existing pages in terms of content, rather than creating new ones: highlight concrete facts in bold, use numbers instead of superlatives, and have each service page begin with a clear, self-contained definition. In addition, a consistent external presence helps – the same facts should also appear outside your own website, for example in industry directories or on review platforms, so that AI systems see them confirmed by multiple sources.

Practical example: From a phrase to a citable statement

A typical before-and-after: From “We have been an experienced partner for AI automation in the SME sector for many years” to “bettersorted is an authorized INQA coach 2026–2027 and a BAFA-listed consultant for AI projects in small and medium-sized enterprises.” The second sentence contains concrete, verifiable facts — exactly what an AI system can incorporate into an answer.

Frequently asked questions about visibility in ChatGPT and Perplexity

Is it enough if my website is technically open to AI crawlers?

That is a prerequisite, but not sufficient. In addition, the content itself must contain clear, citable statements; otherwise, the AI has nothing usable to adopt.

How long does it take for changes to become visible?

That depends on the respective AI system and its update cycle. Initial effects can often be checked within a few weeks, but a reliable assessment usually takes longer.

Do I need to rewrite my entire website?

Usually not. In most cases, it is enough to sharpen the most important pages specifically — the homepage, key service pages, About Us — instead of revising everything at once.

How can I check whether my site is being cited at all today?

By entering typical questions from your target audience directly into ChatGPT or Perplexity and observing whether and how your website appears. That is the quickest initial test.
