AI agent

An AI agent is a program that independently handles a task in several steps: it decides for itself which tools to call, checks the intermediate result, and continues working until the task is completed.

What exactly does AI agent mean?

The difference from a chatbot lies in acting rather than answering. A chatbot provides information; an AI agent completes a task — for example, it reads an incoming email, creates the case in the correct system, requests missing details, and reports back if something remains unclear. In practice, an agent is rarely fully autonomous. Used sensibly, it is given a clearly defined area of responsibility, defined tools, and a point at which a human makes the decision.
